Building Your Credit Wisely
If used properly and at the right times a student credit card can be a great tool. What is such a tool used for? First of all, it will help start the process of building your credit. Second, you have something that can help you out in emergencies.
Let us start with using your college student credit card as a tool to build credit. Why do you need to do this? Well, unfortunately, we do live in a world that revolves around credit. If you plan in the future to buy a car or a home, you will have to have some decent credit. How does having a college student credit card help with that? Well, I am going to tell you. If you use your card responsibly, such as for emergencies to start off with as well as make your payments on time every month you will start to build a good credit history. Building your credit should be a slow process. You actually need to have about 2-3 different credit cards to get to were you want to be, but please do this slowly.
What you want to do is obtain one college student credit card. Use it as an emergency. For example when the car breaks down or you need some supplies for school that you did not account for earlier. These are true emergencies. Make your monthly payments on time every month and when every possible pay it off. You see what you need to do is show the student credit card companies that you have a credit line that is not maxed out all the time. You pay the card off when you can and you will see some good results from this practice. You will soon see other credit card offers come in, such as a store card or even possibly a major credit card. This is good you are receiving the offers but hold off for at least a year until you take the plunge again and get another card. Why? You have to teach yourself patience and responsibility now. What you are doing is for the future not for your current gratification. After a year or so has gone by and you have had no problems with your college student credit card then you have earned the right to get another kind of credit card. You are on the way to a great start of building a good credit history.
Keeping your new college student credit card as an emergency tool is smart. When you start college your income is iffy. So having a tool for emergencies will give you piece of mind. In my opinion an emergency is something you have to have for school that has not already been purchased. Or, maybe you have a car so you can get back and for to that part time job so you can make the payments on your college student credit card. If it breaks down you need to get it fixed so you can continue the financial direction you are now headed.
Always remember what you do now will affect you in the future. Do you want a negative or a positive affect? Think about what you do before you do it and make the responsible decisions now. You are creating financial freedom for yourself now. Good Luck.
