Debt consolidation is combining several loans or debts, into one low monthly payment. People with a student loan debt can lower monthly payments over the long haul with a consolidation loan company by making their payments on time. Consolidation loans and consolidation terms are available through most federal loans and some lenders will offer private consolidation loans as well. There many different consolidation terms that will be explained to you briefly below.
If you are out of college, you can consolidate your federal student loan. There is a new law now that you cannot consolidate your loan will you are still in college at home or on campus. To be qualified for a federal direct consolidation company and consolidation terms, a student needs to have a minimum of one or more loans. You can only consolidate a loan only once and you cannot consolidate one loan, which became effective around 2006.
Both students and parents can consolidate their loans but not at the same time. Parents can consolidate their loans at any time. Married students cannot combine loans together. Now they have to pay separately, according to a relatively new law. Consolidation loans have access to a few repayment plans besides the standard ten-year repayment. However, it is better to take the ten-year standard plan as it saves you money. A FFEL Consolidation Loan is designed to help a student and a parent pay monthly loan under a consolidate company.
These programs and consolidation terms offer applications through mail, by phone or online. If you own a home you might be able to get a consolidation home equity loan to pay off your college debt. The lender will have a lien on your house until you pay off the home equity loan in full. Owning a home and putting up for collateral, the debt consolidation company and its terms will keep the creditors away and you out of bankruptcy. The monthly payment plan will not be as big and you will be able to save extra money in the long run. These programs and consolidation terms should never ask for an upfront fee. If there is one, chances are there is an advance fee loan scam and to find another lender.

College student credit cards are still available, but after February 22, 2010 where college students under the age of 21 must have a co-signer or must prove they have an independent means of repaying the debt incurred on their student credit card.
