1. First, look at the promotional APR periods of the cards you are considering and choose one that has a long promotional rate. A lot of times the cards will offer an interest rate of zero percent for a period of six months. The charges made during that time should be reasonable and the balance should be paid off before the end of the trial period.
2. The second thing that you should use to base your decision on is the rate that follows the introductory rate. For the most part, the rates on student credit cards are extremely high after the introductory rate has expired. You should look for the card that has the lowest APR prior to applying.
3. Pay no attention to the free gift that the company is offering. Although it may seem nice, it shouldn’t come into play when you are looking for a credit card. A lot of the time, the free gift is something that is junk and can be picked up at the dollar store.
4. One of the best ways to build up credit is to get a card that has been issued from a nationally recognized bank. You will find that this card is going to help you establish credit faster than a card from a smaller bank.
5. Look for student credit cards that offer you a rewards program. Often times, they will offer you cash back or give you credit towards purchases of select merchandise.
College is a good time to start establishing your credit.
