Other than books, one of the most expensive things in college is the price of food. But food doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some ways that you can cut down on your college food bill.
1. Stay away from food plans unless it’s required by the school. It may seem like a good idea, but it can be very expensive and you can’t be certain that it will always be used.
2. Use the Internet to compare the prices at the local supermarkets. Using the Internet will help you to find the best prices without having to use any of your gas.
3. Cut back on the meals out. It’s easy and fun to eat out, but it gets to be expensive and it can make you gain weight too. Usually for one nice meal out, you can buy enough things to make three meals at home.
4. Don’t let food go to waste. If you have leftovers and food that is nearing its expiration date, eat it. When you waste food, you waste money as well.
5. Keep an eye on the campus calendar and see if there are any events where food is going be served. Nothing is better than a meal that the college is going to pay for.
6. When you go home to visit, bring back some food with you. Chances are that your parents are going to want to give you some food to take back to college with yo, so accept it.
7. Don’t let people guilt you into letting them eat your food. You may feel like bringing food out when your roommate has guests, but you paid for that food. It’s rightfully yours. So that other people know what food is yours, put your name or initials on it.
8. If your dorm has a kitchen that you can use, use it instead of eating out all the time. That way you’ll know that you have food that you will like and that there is always food available when you are hungry. Buying food at the supermarket is a lot cheaper and healthier than buying pizza.
It’s said that people gain weight when they are in college. When you buy and eat your own food instead of ordering take out, you are going to find that you may not gain as much weight. Food in school doesn’t have to be expensive junk food.
