How to get a College Credit Card
For the most part, a student gets a college credit card by responding to a pre-approval notice in the mail. These notices are sent out to many college students to tempt them to get a college credit card whether they have any experience with credit spending or not. A college credit card company makes their money when you carry a balance, and the credit card company hopes that this is what you will do when you respond to a notice for a credit card.
If you want to tackle getting a college credit card in a more responsible way, consider searching for a credit card online. You can visit any of a handful of college credit card web sites to check out the information on each college card to find out which have the best deals, which college student credit card has the best rates, and which card is of a type that you prefer (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, etc.)
Once you have found a credit card that you like and which offers a great deal, you should apply for the college credit card, usually by filling out an online application. This online application will require that you submit your social security number in order to apply for the college credit card, and they will perform a credit check on you before approving your student credit card application. If your credit is good, or at least not bad, they will likely approve you for a college student credit card.
Once you have successfully applied for a college student credit card, you will need to wait for the credit card to arrive in the mail. Your college credit card should arrive in a matter of weeks, and will require that you call the provided number to activate your card. Once you have done this, your college card is ready for spending. Be careful when spending money on a credit card, to not spend more than you can afford to pay off as soon as the bill comes due.
Your college credit card will help you build your credit score and learn to use credit responsibly, particularly if you pay off your credit card debt as soon as you get the bill, and pay off all college credit card debt in full each time as well.
