While teaching your young adult good spending habits and financial responsibility is very important for there future, alternatively making sure you discuss the dangers of too much credit. This can include: over-extension, debt accumulation, credit scoring and how it works, and the problems with debt at a high rate of interest.

These are all things we need to teach our children about credit. When your young adult is just starting out with a first job or going to college, this is the perfect time to introduce them to a college student credit card. If enrolled in school the ease of obtaining this card is great but more importantly the opportunity to teach them about credit by obtaining it is even greater.

The credit card companies realize these young adults do not have or have very little credit history and are willing to give them the chance to prove themselves anyway. They will start them off with a low credit line and if they prove themselves over time will be able to increase it. There first college student credit card, if taught correctly, will help them to start building a positive credit history. Don’t you wish someone gave you that chance at there age. It was much harder for us many years ago.

Teaching your young adult how to use the college student credit card, when not to use it and how to pay the monthly bills on time every month is the perfect start for them to understanding credit as well as debt accumulation. Treating there college student credit card right and not over spending or charging on it will help to slowly increase the credit score and possible keep the interest rates reasonable. Them understanding that when they abuse the card is when the interest rates can increase or if they skip a payment or are just late on it, will also increase there interest rates.

There are many do’s and don’ts that we need to teach them about when they receive there college student credit card. Make them understand the right way to treat it and the benefits for the future can be unlimited. Such as being able to obtain an auto loan or mortgage on there own in the future. This is what our credit all comes down to, so teach them and let them learn. The will thank you for the help and knowledge you have so carefully provided to them.

As parents it is our duty and responsibility to teach our young adults about credit. Look at your past, bad or good and let them learn from it. There are so many different directions one can take regarding credit. Do some research yourself if you are not sure what or how to teach them. The important thing is that we give it a try for the benefit of there future financial freedom. Our world (financially) is a very difficult place to be right now. Will it get better, maybe if we take the responsibility to teach our young adults we may have a better chance that it will!
