At the same time a student credit card can be a huge responsibility. If the student credit card is not used responsibly it can cause some life-altering consequences for the college student. For this reason it is so important for us to teach our your adults (college students) about financial responsibility. How to use there student credit card, when and were. These financial lessons can save them lots of headaches and pain in the future if we teach them the right things now.
A pre-college student or returning college student will probably get many student credit card offers in the mail a week. What they need to do is look at each and every offer. What are the terms of the student credit card? The interest rate, fees, annual fees, and are there and perks or bonuses. Perks are usually a good seller for a student credit card company, but it is important to realize just because they offer the perk does not mean it will be a good match for you. What I mean by that is a student credit card company could offer gas vouchers. Well, if you do not have a car, what good it that going to do you. So, really comparing and looking at the particular offer is what they need to do. They need to make a decision that will benefit there personal financial situation.
Once they have made a decision on which student credit card best fits them, they need to learn how to use it. The new card should not be used for every day expenses; it should be used for emergencies such as supplies for school or a car break down. It is also important that they do not take on to many college student credit cards. They will get themselves in a heap of trouble if they do that. They are students in school and for the most part do not have much of an income. How will they make monthly payments on more than one student credit card? It is my guess they will have to do some creative financing just to take care of one student credit card. This is were the maturity and responsibility will definitely need to come through.
It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children the way of the world. Our personal experiences need to be relayed to our children. Of course there are those college students that still need to learn it on there own (me), but at lease you did your part by trying. If they do not listen, there is nothing you can do about that.
