Student Loans and Credit Cards

Student loans for college and student credit cards are two ways for undergraduates to pay their college bill. Generally, a student needs a significant amount of funds for collegiate and housing expenses. After scholarship and grant opportunities have been exhausted, student loans for college are the next step.

There are, however, other options outside student loans for college. Borrowers who aren’t in need of a large amount of cash may consider a student credit card. A student credit card is basically a credit card that functions like any other credit card. Lenders offer student credit card programs for borrowers exiting high school who don’t have a long credit history.

If you need some cash for school – say textbooks - taking out student loans for college each year may not be as feasible as the student credit card. With the credit card, the student can charge the needed items and pay the card off over a period of time. If the cardholder doesn’t overcharge and pays the credit card’s monthly payment, he or she can actually build a favorable credit history in the process.

Credit limits for student credit cards are based on a variety of factors including credit history and credit score, personal income, and other bank account balances. The higher your credit score and income, the better your chances of receiving a card with a high limit. If you do not qualify for a high limit from the start, credit card lenders will usually increase the card’s limit after the borrower makes consistent payments and maintains a low balance.

A college student credit card is not for everyone though. They do tend to have higher interest rates then student loans for college. Whether or not you should chose one over a student loan depends on your personal situation and financial goals. To learn more about student credit cards visit www.studentcreditcards.com.
