The Benefits of Volunteering in College – Non Student Credit Card
It may seem like with all you do—school, work, and a social life—there’s really no time to think about someone else’s needs, much less to spend time helping them out. But while it’s true that volunteering is its own reward, and something you do because it’s good and right, there are also a lot of ways in which you benefit from it as well.
• Resume Credit. Having volunteerism on your resume makes you look far-sighted, caring, and responsible…exactly the kind of employees most employers want. In addition, you can use your volunteer work to build skills that you will need later, such as people skills, leadership, organization, and multicultural experience.
• Free food. College students get as hungry as anyone else. If you are working at a soup kitchen, you’ll get to share in the clients’ meal. If you are working in an after school program, you’ll get to share in the kids’ snacks. If you’re staffing a concession stand, you’ll get a drink and a few hot dogs. Many volunteer opportunities come with the chance to share a snack or meal, and when you’re budget is tight, how can you turn that down?
• Free entertainment. Theater and music departments are always looking for volunteers to act as ushers or crew members. If you sign up for a few hours a week, you not only get to support the arts, but you also get to see a great show—and one that you might not have been able to afford otherwise.
• Free sporting events. Many university stadiums and gyms allow campus groups to staff their concession stands as a fundraiser—they provide the labor for free and receive part of the profits from the stand. If you volunteer for set up, clean up, or half-time, you’re free to watch the game at all the other times.
• Meeting new people. The more you progress in your major, the more you see the same people in all your classes. Volunteering allows you to meet new, interesting people who have similar interests as you—but different ones from your classmates. It’s a great way to add some diversity to your circle of acquaintances,
Volunteering is something you do because you want to make a difference in your community. But like so many other good things, you can receive as much as you give to others. Also, while volunteering you will not be in a spending mindset, thus you won’t be using your credit card. Volunteering and credit cards might not seem related, but they are in an indirect way. As mentioned above when you’re working you’re not spending and the same goes for volunteering. When a college student is interning or volunteering they are preserving money without really knowing it, namely less activity or usage on the student credit card.
