Using Your Credit Card Responsibly

Uncategorized

For many college students, student credit cards will be the first step towards establishing a credit history. This will be a valuable tool for the rest of their lives. For other college students, it may be the beginning of a cycle of debt. The difference between the two is discipline and knowledge.

Many college students have and use a college student credit card. Some college students use them wisely and allow it to build them an early credit history however others just end up gathering lots of debt that will have to be paid off once the student life is over. College students that have a student credit card need to learn how to take charge and manage their finances as soon as possible. The time between teen years and adulthood, unfortunately is very short. So, the sooner a college student starts to manage there own financial matters the sooner they will develop useful financial skills. Student credit cards are no longer considered privilege for wealthy college student but are now considered a social entitlement.

It has become very easy for a college student to obtain a student credit card. The offers for student credit cards are everywhere your college student is. You will find them in campuses, at social functions, in their mail boxes, in bookstores, as well as the college financial aid office. This is because credit card companies consider a college student to be a good customer. First of all they can be loyal; once a college student obtains a credit card, they are likely to keep that credit card for years to come. This will also prompt them to just upgrade there current card rather than seeking a new card when needed.

Today, the conditions to obtain a student credit card are extremely weak, so more and more college students will have access to them. Even without a steady source of income, the ease is there. Moreover, this is a second reason why student credit card companies offer more and more credit cards to students: they usually can not repay their debts in time. This is where the credit card companies make there money unfortunately. They can make lots of money from late payment penalties and interest fees on unpaid credit card balances, annual fees and more.

Every college student would like to have at least one college student credit card for those emergencies. This is fine as long is they use the card correctly. When they do use it strictly for emergencies they will not be over charging and creating all those nasty fees that will go along with it. The key is to be responsible and think about your purchases before you make them. A budget is a great idea. Make a monthly budget and try to stick to it. There is nothing wrong with a college student having a college student credit card as long as they know how to deal with credit and keep themselves out of debt. If we teach them they may learn.
