What to do with the private student loan paperwork?
Part 1

When a family decides that the best course of action to provide their children with a high-level education is to get a private student loan, a process will be initiated, and it will be part of their lives until the private student loan is fully repaid; which can take several years.

Until that moment arrives, the private student loan will become an active part of the household steady and fixed expenses, as such, it can cause problems in terms of unregistered payments and other complications that are a normal occurrence in any type of loan. Therefore, it is important that the family members all are well aware of the procedure and the paperwork that the private student loan entailed, so that if an unforeseen event occurs, anyone can react and deal with it, not only the student or his or her parents.

Archiving the paperwork as well as selecting the file or binder where it will be stored can also be a family task, there is no need for it to be “plain or undecorated”, and the small children of the house can participate in the decoration. As a result, they will be fully aware and up to date with the movements and documents filed regarding the private student loan of their sibling.

Whether you are the parent or the student, try to obtain at least a copy from all the documentation that is submitted in the process of the private student application. If you had to submit copies of specific documentation, make sure that the loan officer or the private student loan company executive signs a copy for you as a receipt or that an actual receipt is given to you as proof that you handed in such documentation. When the private student loan is successfully repaid, it will be the chance you will have to prove that you submitted such documents and that are expecting them back.

Remember to try to keep additional “originals” of your documents just in case something might happen to your originals while being submitted to the private student loan company and they have them on file. That way you will never be out of originals and you can submit them to other places and continue your life without delay or fuss.

Make sure that the private student loan executive, or the loan officer give you a copy of the contract that you are signing; it might happen that the private student loan company does not work that way, that they do not provide their clients with contract copies. Even in this case they do have to provide you with some sort of receipt or voucher that you signed the contract with them.
