Why You Should Use a Student Credit Card Responsibly
Your age does not matter, a student credit card will mean trouble if you have not been educated on the subject of personal finance, budgeting, as well as the proper use of credit. If you were never taught this as a teenager, then as a young adult it should be about time that you do teach yourself. This could mean taking a personal finance class that may be offered at your college or at least reading everything that you can get your hands on about personal finance. Since it is likely that you have never supported yourself before, without any assistance of your parents, it will be important that you get this education before you try to obtain a student credit card. This can be a time of many new things, and it will be very tempting to pull out the student credit card for anything and everything, without considering whether or not you can actually afford it. There will be many tainted credit reports that start to go downhill with a student credit card.
Once you have taught yourself about personal finance, budgeting, and also the proper use of credit, you must now decide if you are responsible enough to handle a student credit card. If you have already proven a history of making choices before you can consider the consequences and potential consequences of your actions, then a student credit card may not be a wise choice for you. However, if you have a history of dealing with money in a responsible manner, and have even managed to save up some money that you earned while in high school, then a student credit card will probably be a great benefit for you.
Being a teenager and being responsible enough to have saved or put away money in a bank account and not spend it shows me you can handle your own personal finances like an adult. Do keep in mind many adult find this a difficult task. You may shy away from a student credit card because of all the bad publicity you have heard about people getting themselves in over there heads, however, many people can and do use credit responsibly and are able to maintain a good credit record. Unfortunately, in today’s world, having a good credit history is a must, and to do this you must have credit cards or loans in order to establish a credit record. Unless you do have a good credit history, getting things like a mortgage or a car will be almost impossible.
Whether you know if you can be responsible with a student credit card or not, if you have decided to get one, you must still educate yourself on the proper way to use a student credit card. This will mean no late payments to be recorded on your credit record, paying as much on the credit card as you can every month, and watching how you do use your student credit card. A high balance can and probably will lower your credit score until it is paid back down to an acceptable level. There are so many resources out there, on the Internet as well as in books that can help teach you about these proper uses so that you can use your student credit card to your advantage and build up a great credit history that will take you into your adult years.
