Are you a high school graduate looking forward to your first year in college? All the new and exciting things that college life, not to mention adult life has to offer. Making decisions on your own. Doing what you want to do. Ok, you have squared away all the financial aid and school loan issues to pay for your higher education coming up, but have you thought about the little things? Little things like emergencies that will come up in the coming year. Emergencies like, a lab book you did not realize you needed and you are on a fixed income at his point.

Now is the time to start thinking about a student credit card. However, it is very important to think hard and weigh your options. Why? Because there are so many student credit card options out there, you need to make sure you pick something that will work for you and your particular financial needs and abilities.

We are all different and have different needs. Therefore, when looking at all the options for a student credit card, ask yourself some very important questions.

1. What can I afford to pay back every month if I do use it?
2. How much am I going to pay in interest?
3. What will my minimum monthly payment be if I do have a true emergency?

What would you consider a true emergency. In my book, that would be medical, car repairs, or as stated before, a book or something needed for school that was not taken into consideration before.

If you are not working how and why would you even think about a student credit card. Well, many people are being supported during there college years. Not only by parents but also by many different kinds of financial aid assistance. So, in many cases you may actually have a little extra money every month and this may not be so far fetched or out of the questions. The key is to use this extra money wisely.

There is certainly nothing wrong with having a pizza with your friends once and a while. You just have to have the will power and ability to not do it regular and often. You are in school to learn for your future so focus on that and do not get lost in the fun stuff that can also go with college life. Many college students drop out because they have made poor decisions when it comes to finances. Make your decisions wise.

When looking at the many different options of student credit cards, look at the perks they are offering you, the interest rate and penalties that will go along with not making an on time payment. Each one of us is different, therefore, some of the perks offered may not do you any good at all. If that is the case, move on to the next one and see what it will offer you.

It is very important to always read the fine print before you sign anything. And for goodness sakes do not get a student credit card because you want the t-shirt they are offering you now for just signing up. There is so much more in life you need to base your decisions on.

A student credit card is a privilege not a freebie. Therefore, think about it, talk to your parents or someone you admire as fare as money matters go. Do what is right for you not what could be good for the company, and have fun. Remember, the decisions you make today will carry into your adult life after college. Make the right chooses.
