Your Child And A Student Credit Card

Uncategorized

Does the above statement frighten you? If you have done your duty and started to teach your high school or college age child the does and don’ts of credit, it will not. It is so important that we as parents take on the responsibility of teaching our children about credit. It is such a major thing and can tremendously affect our daily lives.

My belief is we should talking to our children as early as junior high about credit, loans and financial matters that are impacting your particular lives. We learn be seeing and hearing in so many cases. Take this opportunity to teach your children something they will use for the rest of there lives.

A student credit card cannot only take the edge off of emergencies in your college student’s life, but will also start to build a great financial future for them if used right. Credit card companies are generally happy to get a college student started with a credit card because they can see the potential for growth not only educationally but also financially. After all, they are going to college to better themselves and be able to obtain a higher paying job.

The things we need to teach our students are to think before they act and to read and ask questions if something does not sound right to them. A student credit card can offer so many perks and benefits to a college student that could just suck them in without thinking. However, we need to remind them they must think. If a student credit card, company is offering frequent flyer miles but they live right around the corner from the college, is this going to be beneficial for them. Probably not. On the other hand, if a student credit card is offering free gas with certain purchases, that will benefit them cause they do a lot of driving not only for themselves but drive there little brother and sister all over town for you. This is a perk that can be taken advantage of.

Many student credit card offers will be automatically mailed to your child. In addition, they will have access to numerous offers on campus. Many times, they will set up booths on campus and do give a ways such as t-shirts if they just sign up. Discourage your child from doing this. As you know every time they fill out an application it puts a mark on there little but growing credit history.

They need to get the one student credit card that has the right perks and bonuses for them. Use it wisely and pay there bill on time every month. This is what will build the good credit history for them. You as a parent will also have the piece of mind knowing your college student has an emergency back up if anything should happen. This could be from car repairs to those lab fees or books that were not originally considered in the budget.

Teaching our children will help them to become independent and self-sufficient and give you piece of mind cause you know they can and will make the right decisions.
